Difference in the effectiveness of subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s disease

چکیده
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is regarded as a feasible Parkinson’s disease (PD) treatment option. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) and globus pallidus (GPi) are the two most common sites for DBS. following criteria were used to select studies that examined Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) III: (1) had at least three months of follow-up; (2) compared both GPi STN-DBS; (3) each group included five individuals; (4) conducted after 2010. majority found no statistically significant difference in UPDRS score improvements between groups. Although there some encouraging findings terms action tremor, rigidity, urinary symptoms, indicating STN-DBS would be better alternative, appeared side effects; nonetheless, it cannot said superior. Other larger randomized clinical trials with longer follow-up periods control groups required determine which target more effective has fewer negative effects on patients. Deep brain stimulation for the treatment of Parkinson's disease: subthalamic nucleus versus globus pallidus internus.
OBJECTIVES Deep brain stimulation of the basal ganglia has become a promising treatment option for patients with Parkinson's disease who have side effects from drugs. Which is the best target-globus pallidus internus (GPi) or subthalamic nucleus (STN)-is still a matter of discussion. The aim of this prospective study is to compare the long term effects of GPi and STN stimulation in patients wit...

A BSTRACT Background Increased neuronal activity in the subthalamic nucleus and the pars interna of the globus pallidus is thought to account for motor dysfunction in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Although creating lesions in these structures improves motor function in monkeys with induced parkinsonism and patients with Parkinson’s disease, such lesions are associated with neurologic defic...

متن کاملComparison of Globus Pallidus Interna and Subthalamic Nucleus in Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson Disease: An Institutional Experience and Review
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has revolutionized the lives of patients of Parkinson disease, offering therapeutic options to those not benefiting entirely from medications alone. With its proven track record of outperforming the best medical management, the goal is to unlock the full potential of this therapy. Currently, the Globus Pallidus Interna (GPi) and Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) are both vi...
متن کاملDeep Brain Stimulation of the Subthalamic Nucleus Improves Lexical Switching in Parkinsons Disease Patients
OBJECTIVE Reduced verbal fluency (VF) has been reported in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), especially those treated by Deep Brain Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN DBS). To delineate the nature of this dysfunction we aimed at identifying the particular VF-related operations modified by STN DBS. METHOD Eleven PD patients performed VF tasks in their STN DBS ON and OFF conditio...
